The groin kick is a very powerful technique, as it can completely disable an opponent with a very quick, non-lethal technique. Combined with the element of surprise, it is a devastating blow that causes the attacker intense pain. So strong is the pain that comes from a blow to the testicles that eyes water, nausea takes over, and the legs give in. A strong kick to the testes can cause permanent injury.
The picture sequence shows an attacker kicking with a front kick, which is parried by the Karateka on the left, who instantly exploits the opening with a quick groin kick.
The groin kick is a quick flick aimed between the attackers legs, with emphasis on speed and surprise rather than power. The groin is struck with either the top of the foot or with the shin. From close distance it also can be the knee or thigh. As it is easy to perform, the groin kick is not only found in Karate and other martial arts, but is also ideal for women\’s self defence situations. However, even relatively simple techniques like the groin kick need to be practiced before they can be applied effectively in a life-threatening situation.
